Starting with number one. SYNC… One of the most hated and controversial words in the DJ world… It’s like the battle between pro-vaxxers vs. the anti-vaxxers.
Now the problem that many people have with sync, is that it takes away the art of “true” DJing and beatmatching. It’s often viewed as “cheating” and the short-cut method of becoming a DJ.
Now if you’re a beginner DJ, I highly recommend that you learn how to manually beatmatch first, and develop an ear for mixing. If you’re looking to start, there’s plenty of tutorials on my channel here to begin.
Now for more experienced and intermediate DJ’s, I actually recommend using sync in a way to enhance your DJ sets.
First, it’s just a lot faster. If you require to make really fast transitions or are doing a lot of technical work in your mix, sync helps to let you work more on your mix and make your transitions, rather than focusing on matching the BPM’s.
Now the next DJ rule to break is that you don’t have to mix songs all the time.
When it comes to mixing for a crowd, they don’t really care how technical your mixing is or that you’re using the most advanced DJ techniques.
What they do care about is your song selection.
Now obviously, you’ll need to be able to make decent transitions, because a crowd will notice a bad transition… but the point is, focus more on reading the crowd and selecting tracks that they will enjoy.
The third DJ rule you should break: Stop downloading thousands of songs into your library.
As a DJ, it may feel natural to download hundreds or even thousands of songs into your DJ software, because we often feel that bigger is better… You may feel as a result, making your full money’s worth of your record pool subscription, and feel more equipped to play for any kind of event you have. But the reality is that you aren’t, you’re actually doing the opposite.
While it’s important to stay up to date with the latest tracks and trends, keeping a smaller music library will benefit you in the sense that you won’t be cluttering your DJ software with tracks you probably won’t even play.
With an overload of songs, you’re burying the tracks that you really need and could even struggle to find them sometimes.
The fourth rule to break, is DON’T plan your sets.
Many DJ’s like to curate a very precise set for their gigs, with each track in a specific order and arrangement.
While this may be good for clubs or festival sets, the majority of open-format and mobile DJ’s should not follow this.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t plan for your gigs, because you should… but rather than spending your time listing the exact orders of songs you’ll play, take the time to explore your music and understand your playlists and genres of music; because that’ll prepare you for any gig that you take on.
Now my last advice to breaking DJ rules, is to be accepting of requests!
You may hear lots of DJ’s saying “I hate requests” or never even taking them at gigs, because they feel that the crowd doesn’t respect the choice music that they’re playing.
Now remember, as DJ’s, it is our job to be tastemakers and to provide a memorable experience to our crowd through the songs we play.
