Dragons and mystical creatures appeared on maps for centuries to denote many different things – manifestations of fears, natural phenomena, people animals and places that weren’t known, just for drama — depending on who drew them. We still do this today albeit in different ways. When I first saw maps like this as a kid I didn’t think the dragons were scary I thought this was some amazing world we got rid of. I still wonder what we are doing.
