In this video, we discuss mic preamp requirements for modern drum recording, why channel count matters, why 8 channels probably isn’t enough and what gear on the market offers the best value for money. We test the Audient ASP880 with its variable impedance feature and use the Avantone CDMK 7 drum mic kit, recording drums and AB the difference impedance settings.

Hopefully this adds to the conversation on whether spending more on a preamp actually improves the sound, or if the difference is negligible.
