Doing drastic BPM and genre changes with non-friendly DJ songs is a whole new level of difficulty in mixing.

You can technically lower the BPM of a song to match the other, but mixing them together without a proper DJ intro is still quite hard, and actually may result to a weird sounding mix since you’re mixing between a wide BPM range.

So one way I transition comfortably between drastic BPMS, and genres and keep the energy up and is by using the Echo effect.

► SCRIPT:

The idea is this.

With the current song playing, Activate an echo effect to fade it away, then stop the song, and while the echo bounces, trigger the next song by either scratching it in, hot cuing it in or just playing it in. It totally depends on you and your creativity.

So you’re technically using an echo effect to fade the current song away, and you’re also using your sense of timing to play the next song in.

By doing this you also create some tension and a little anticipation for the next song.

But what you have to keep in mind is that your next song should be pretty memorable so that the audience can appreciate the tension and anticipation you just created.

So first thing you want to do is to ready your echo effect, so here are my settings,

Effect: Echo, Dry/Wet: 50%, Beats: 1/2

If you use any other software, don’t worry. Simply set the dry/wet parameter to 50%, and the beat parameter to 1/2.

So let’s play our first song. Once we reach an area where we want to transition to another song, we activate echo, stop the track, and follow the bounce of that echo, for this one let’s scratch the next song in.

So the trick here is timing. This type of transition requires practice, but once you master it, transitioning to any bpm or genre with any song will be like breathing.

You just need the knowledge to know what you’re next song is gonna be and the confidence to create silence and anticipation for it.

So let’s move on from our 2nd song to the third.

We follow the same principle. Wait for an area where we want to transition out, activate the echo, lower the volume or stop the current song ,and trigger the next song via scratching it in or hot cuing it in or just playing it in. For this one, let’s just play it in.

Song selection is the most important thing here, so remember to really know what you’re going to do. You can’t just echo out and play the next song in expecting things to go well with the audience. They’re not mindless.

They’re expecting something, so deliver them good selection.

Knowing what to play next is what makes a great dj great.

So move from our 3rd song to the 4th, and this time let’s hot cue it in.

Here’s a Pro tip;

Choosing songs with recognizable intros I find is what works best with the audience, so songs that have drum or vocal intros are perfect for this type of transition.
