How to use PAD FX to make a mix EPIC!

In this video, we’re going spice your mix up and explore the PAD Fx Functions on Rekordbox DJ! Specifically, the roll effect, trans effect and vinyl break effect.

► SCRIPT:

We’re gonna break this thing into 2 parts. The first will be prepping your PAD Fx functions, and the second will be how to apply them tastefully in a mix.

So to prep your PAD Fx functions, on Rekordbox DJ, near the cue point section, click on Hot cue and from the drop down menu click PAD FX, then click the tool icon and now we can edit our Pad FX functions.

Let’’s first start out with with the beat roll effect.

Click on a spot then select beat fx, then click on roll, and now next to it, select 1/2
Then do the same again with another spot but this time select 1/4.

Next effect will be trans, so select another spot then select trans, then select 1/2
Then do the same thing again on another spot but this time select 1/4.

And the last effect to prep is the vinyl break FX. So select another spot then select Release FX, then select V. Brake then select it to be 3/4

To access your newly edited pad FX functions, simply locate the pad fx button on your controller, and click it.

For some controllers like this, we have to press shift, then the pad FX function.

Now how to we use these effects tastily in a mix without killing the audience? The trick is to remember that less is more.

So when activating any of these effects do them at specific sections in a mix you think these effects will sound good.

As for me, I usually activate them on the 1 at the end of 4 beats.

But it’s totally up to you when and where you would want to use them in a mix, just be mindful of how frequently you activate them because you may end up ruining the song if you go crazy on the effects.

Just think of these pad FX function as you sprinkling the mix with variation.
