Juan “Jon Jon” Hernandez grew up in Brooklyn, NY in an era that was rich for music, and the arts and today is referred to by many notables as a DJ’s DJ. His introduction to New York nightlife would change his perception of music and the art of DJing. His education began at Starship, Inferno, Paradise Garage, The Loft, Zanzibar, Area, Danceteria, Save The Robots, The World, The Saint, and the DJs there would leave an indelible mark on him.
In 1982, Jon began working at Downstairs Records where he became integral in the promotion of new records that hit the dance floors of NYC. In 1984, Jon was given the opportunity to mix the Dub Version of “No Favors” by Temper for MCA Records. “No Favors” hit number one on the Billboard “Hot Dance/Club Play” and would remain there for seven weeks. Jon went on to take on jobs at The Ozone Layer, where he did lights and would open and fill in for DJ/record producer David Morales; Better Days Club, alongside legendary DJ/Record Producer Bruce Forest; Heartthrobs Nightclub (formerly known as The Fun House) where he DJ’d; and at the original Sound Factory (opened in 1989 by Manhattan nightlife maven Christina Visca, with DJ Junior Vasquez, Richard Grant & Phil Smith) where he worked lights.
Although his dedication and love for this scene often finds him on a dance floor, Jon remains a driving force behind the scenes where he works in promoting the music he loves, and as support staff for Danny Krivit and Benny Soto’s monthly 718 Sessions parties.
