When you first look at the software, it doesn’t appear that much has changed apart from the improved 3-band EQ waveforms and inverted color mode. However, Pioneer has updated their software by expanding their capabilities and features, such as a new cloud library, auto-relocate for missing files, membership options and a redesigned iOS app. Rekordbox DJ Performance mode is also now available for those without a controller or license.
Starting with the cloud library. This brand new feature enables you to sync your library via Dropbox; where you have the ability to access your tracks on another computer, as long as it has access to the internet. This includes your playlists, hot cues and other track data.
Their waveform has also upgraded to a 3-Ban EQ visual. This function indicates the volume of each frequency band; where blue represents the lows, amber represents the mids, and white represents the highs.
Now the part of this upgrade that some of you may be most wondering about, are the monthly costs and membership plans.
The way Pioneer has arranged this, is by having three tiers of plans. There’s a Free Plan, Core Plan and Creative Plan.
In the free plan, it includes the ability to use both Rekordbox Export Mode and Performance mode without the need for a license or controller. You can simply use it with just a PC or Mac. If you happen to have a “Hardware Unlock” device meaning that your controller/mixer was specifically designed for Rekordbox or is available on this list: https://rekordbox.com/en/support/faq/v6/#faq-q1525 then you are free to use basic features on the software without a fee.
That unfortunately means that if you have a controller such as the DDJ-SX or DDJ-SZ that you used Rekordbox with, it will no longer be available to connect. A core or creative plan will be required for connectivity.
At US$6.99, comes the Core Plan. Included in this package, contains everything the free package offers, but with the addition of using â€Advanced DJ Functions’, DVS Capability and formatibility with controllers that are not part of the “Hardware Unlock Devices,” but Rekordbox compatible.
Third and finally at US$9.99 is the creative mode. This is where Rekordbox’s new features such as Cloud Library Sync comes into play. The cloud is not actually a free feature that comes in version 6.0. To activate the cloud sync, you must register for this plan. Included in this bundle alongside the Core Package features, are Lyric Features, Video Features, Sequencer and RXM Effects.
As upgrades are continuously made to the DJ tools and gear we use, it often comes with excitement. However, not this time.
In my opinion, I personally hate this…
I don’t approve of where Pioneer DJ took Rekordbox with incorporating paid subscription services and having to pay for in-controller features that you already paid for with Rekordbox DJ 5.0 such as DVS, Effects and Video Mixing capabilities. This appears to be a slap in the face of the consumer who trusted Pioneer DJ when they first launched the Rekordbox DJ software.
Keep in mind as well that unless you have a music library of under 2GB… which is probably none of you… you’ll be required to additionally activate a Dropbox starting at $9 US for 2TB. So you’ll be paying more than just Rekordbox’s fees.
About your old controllers….
I can imagine that some of you may have previously bought a controller and used Rekordbox DJ with it. All of your tracks, hot cues and playlists are there, and never expected that you would need to pay monthly at some point to continue using that controller. Would you buy a new compatible controller? Or deal with the fact that you need to pay every month to continue DJ’ing unlike before?
