SHIMZA One Man Show live from Robben Island | Mandela Day 2020 (Afro House DJ set)

Celebrating Nelson Mandela Day, Mixmag is honoured to showcase this historic stream from Robben Island – Mandela’s former prison – featuring one of South Africa’s biggest talents, Shimza.

The project is supported by the Kolisi Foundation and all money raised from donations will be used to provide food parcels for hungry families in South African Townships, now severely impacted by the COVID crisis. Donate here: https://www.howler.co.za/shimzarobbenisland

NELSON MANDELA
Nelson Mandela is the former president of South Africa, who before becoming leader spent 27 years in prison for fighting Apartheid – the system that discriminated between white and black citizens.

Mandela served 17 years of his sentence on Robben Island – the former prison facility and location of this historic stream – which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. After his release in 1990, Mandela went on to be elected President of South Africa and proceeded to unite and help heal the nation.

Today (July 18) is Mandela Day – when South Africa (and indeed the world) – celebrates the sacrifice and achievements of one of the most inspirational and influential leaders of the modern age.

SHIMZA
Shimza has become an essential figure across the global dance music world, renowned for his slick productions and infectious Afro Tech sound. A dedicated philanthropist, he has been hosting his One Man Show events for over a decade, raising funds for underprivileged children and causes close to his heart in South Africa. The historic livestream performance on Robben Island is the latest evolution of this.

SIYA KOLISI
The Kolisi Foundation is a charity set up by South African Rugby player, Siya Kolisi, who is featured in conversation with Shimza at the start of this stream. From a poor background, Siya was awarded a rugby scholarship and went on to be the country’s first black national rugby team captain – winning the World Cup for the Springboks in 2019.

The money raised from this project will be used to provide food parcels for families in South Africa’s Townships that have been hit especially hard by the COVID crisis.

ROBBEN ISLAND AND MANDELA DAY:
Located in Table Bay off the coast of Cape Town, SA, Robben Island was used as a fortified prison until 1996. Nelson Mandela was a prisoner there for 18 of the 27 years he served behind bars. Now standing as both a South African National and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island has become one of the most politically symbolic and treasured locations in the world. Celebrated on Nelson Mandela’s birthday, Mandela Day honours the legacy of the former South African president, whilst promoting his life’s work to abolish poverty and spread peace, justice and cultural diversity across the globe.
